Over the weekend I was on my YouTube music channel and as I looked through the couple of videos that weren’t set as public I noticed that this one ‘More to life than this’ was on that setting. ‘More to life than this’ was pretty much the first song I wrote and was the first of my compositions that I recorded. While it’s not perfect vocally or in other ways I’m quite proud of it.
Here’s the words I wrote when I first uploaded it and there’s not much more for me to add:
“The first of my own songs that I wrote – and then recorded back in 1997. It’s quite dear and ironically it laid the foundations for pretty much all the other songs I have written about life and self – not that I was aware of it at the time.
That is the magic of music that you can’t really take credit for it. Songs just arrive and your job as a ‘fisherman’ is to haul them in, in tact. That said the original lyric was weak and I was encouraged to re-write it. I’m so glad that I did. Since then the lyrics have pretty much written themselves. I feel that your job as songwriter is just to listen to the track that’s coming through; words and music – almost is if it were being played in another room and you just have to make out what’s being played and capture true as you can to what’s what’s being heard…as honest as you can with the limited skills that one has. It has challenges attached especially, if like myself you are not really a ‘musician’. I guess that’s the beauty of collaboration.”
